The Wairoa Young Achievers Trust (WYAT) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the Taitama Waka Ama Team, Tōiriiri Te Mana, as they return home from a recent competition, brimming with pride and success. Thanks to the support of WYAT and the dedication of their manager, Rebecca King, and steerer, Koka Christina Stockman, these young paddlers have not only forged lifelong memories but have also established a foundation in a sport they love.

The event saw Tōiriiri Te Mana competing against top-level teams, showcasing their talent, resilience, and teamwork. In their W12 race, the boys teamed up with Heretaunga, competing against 40 other waka in a fiercely contested section. After placing 3rd in their first heat, they advanced to the semifinals, where they once again secured 3rd place, earning them a spot in the finals. The team finished in an impressive 4th place overall—a commendable achievement in such a competitive field.

Their W6 race was equally inspiring. With sheer determination and skilful paddling, the team advanced through the semifinals with a 3rd place finish and surged ahead in the finals to claim 2nd place. These remarkable results reflect not only the boys’ commitment but also the unwavering support of their whānau and community.

Special recognition must go to Koka Christina Stockman, whose strategic coaching skills, dedication, and motivational support have been pivotal to the team’s success. Her time and effort during training sessions have helped shape the boys into the skilled and determined paddlers they are today. The team’s achievements are a testament to her expertise and guidance.

Rebecca King, the team’s manager, shared heartfelt words of gratitude, saying, “Our boys have made lifelong friends, memories to last a lifetime, and have discovered a forever sport they will continue with. Your manākitanga shown to our tamariki has helped us achieve this—thank you!”

She added that the team returned to Wairoa overwhelmed with joy, knowing they had given their all on the water. The pride of the community was evident as the boys paddled their hearts out, proving their dedication and the strength of their spirit.

The Taitama Waka Ama Team also demonstrated transparency and responsibility by sharing a detailed account of their team spending, exemplifying their commitment to accountability and trust.

As the first of several grant applications for this event supported by WYAT, Tōiriiri Te Mana sets a shining example of the impact of investing in our rangatahi. By fostering opportunities like these, WYAT continues to empower young achievers to reach new heights, both on and off the water.

To the Tōiriiri Te Mana team and their incredible supporters like Koka Christina and Rebecca, WYAT extends its warmest congratulations on your fantastic results and your inspiring journey. You have truly embodied the values of perseverance, teamwork, and excellence that WYAT stands for.
