The Wairoa Ross Shield team delivered an inspiring performance at the 2024 Ross Shield Tournament, held in Waipukurau from 30th September to 5th October. Competing against fierce opposition, the team achieved one win, one draw, and three losses, finishing fourth equal with Hastings East.

Despite a challenging 80-0 loss to Napier, the team demonstrated incredible heart and resilience, proving Wairoa is a force to be reckoned with. Isiah Tekahika’s outstanding performance earned him the coveted Taupo Shield Player of the Tournament award, and he, along with Harlem Lloyd, TJ King, and Kustom King-Paul, was selected for the prestigious Hawke’s Bay Paper team.

The team’s success extended far beyond the scoreboard. Their decision to stay together in shared accommodations for the duration of the tournament fostered a strong sense of unity and shared purpose. Evenings were spent reflecting on games, planning strategies, and building bonds that would last well beyond the tournament. Their collaboration with the Wakely Shield team reinforced the ethos of “One Town, One Team,” as both squads aligned their training schedules and supported each other throughout the competition.

Coach Wayne Hema reflected on the goals set for the tournament, which were about more than just winning. “We aimed to build a positive culture, foster pride in our whānau, and create better tamariki on and off the field. While we didn’t win the tournament, we succeeded in achieving those goals. The skills, sportsmanship, and friendships our boys developed are what truly matter.”

Key support from the Wairoa Young Achievers Trust (WYAT) made this journey possible. WYAT’s backing helped the team access opportunities to compete at this level and provided vital resources to ensure the tamariki had the support they needed, both on and off the field.

The tournament also highlighted the power of community. Sponsors played a critical role in funding the team’s participation, with Katie Cornwall leading the way in securing sponsorship and managing accounts. Special thanks go to Avon and Russel Lloyd, whose delicious kai kept the players energised and focused throughout the week.

While the results may not have met every expectation, the team returned home with their heads held high, knowing they had represented Wairoa with pride and determination. The resilience they showed during challenging moments, combined with the connections formed within the team and the wider Ross and Wakely whānau, made the tournament an invaluable experience.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the team is determined to build on the lessons learned this year. Early planning, refining game strategies, and fostering further community support will be key priorities as they aim to reach even greater heights.

The Wairoa Ross Shield team extends heartfelt thanks to their management team, the Wakely Shield team, WYAT, sponsors, cooks, and the wider community for their unwavering support.

“Ngā mihi to everyone who believed in us and supported us on this journey,” said Coach Hema. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved and excited about what’s to come. The future is bright for Wairoa rugby.”

With their determination, strong community backing, and the values instilled through this tournament, the Wairoa Ross Shield team is ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead, continuing to inspire pride in their town and beyond.
