Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ)

Are you looking for support in finding a job?
Are you not currently in education, training, or employment?
Are you a local employer with a job opportunity but need assistance with wage costs?

The Wairoa Young Achievers Trust (WYAT) youth coaches are here to help!

Our goal is to guide you towards a career or training pathway that leads to the life you want. The MTFJ initiative, driven by a nationwide network of New Zealand Mayors, aims to connect everyone with opportunities in employment, education, or training. Originally launched to support workers displaced by COVID-19, MTFJ has expanded to support anyone not engaged in work or training, with no age restrictions.

Wairoa Mayor Craig Little, in partnership with WYAT, delivers this FREE programme on behalf of the Wairoa District Council—referrals are open to anyone!

Unsure where to begin your job search?

Your youth coach can guide you through the process of finding the right path. Whether it’s identifying the training you need, helping you enrol in a course, or planning long-term goals, we are here for you. Our support includes:

  • Building communication skills
  • Getting your driver’s licence
  • Crafting your CV
We’ll be with you every step of the way, helping you take one step at a time.

Concerned about costs?

Starting a new job often comes with financial pressures. Your youth coach will connect you with support options to ease the transition, including:

  • Driving courses, lessons, and testing
  • Specialised industry licences (e.g., forklift, traffic control)
  • Courses that enhance employability (e.g., First Aid, Health & Safety)
  • Help with transport and groceries during your first week at work
  • Prepaid phone top-ups for employer contact
  • Assistance with work-related expenses (e.g., boots, jackets, tools)

Employer Support

If you’re an employer, we offer support to ease the cost of hiring new staff. Through initiatives like MSD’s Mana in Mahi and Flexi-wage, we can help cover wage costs, provide equipment, and offer ongoing post-placement support. Your youth coach will stay engaged to ensure a smooth transition for both you and your new employee.

Facing personal challenges before focusing on work?

We understand that life can present obstacles. Whether it’s mental health, addiction, family crises, or other challenges, your youth coach is here to listen and help. We’ll connect you with services, create plans that adapt to your needs, and provide support whenever you need it. You’ll have regular check-ins to ensure you’re on track.

If you or your whānau are facing hardships due to unemployment or low income, we can offer further assistance.
