WYAT is making a profound impact on the lives of local youth by providing essential support that reconnects them with education, training, and opportunities within their community.
Through a robust partnership with the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), the Trust has gained significant momentum, producing remarkable outcomes that benefit not only young people but also the wider Wairoa region.
WYAT is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by youth who have become disengaged from school or the workforce. By offering targeted programmes and clear pathways to recognised qualifications, the Trust is enabling these young people to realise their potential and build bright, successful futures.
Work and Income Regional Contracts Manager Jacinta Vella commended the partnership with WYAT, highlighting the positive change the Trust is driving through its community-based approach.
“Wairoa’s young people are being given the opportunities they need to thrive, thanks to a team that truly understands their challenges and is providing tailored, impactful solutions. The partnership between MSD and the Trust has been a key factor in this success, and the results speak for themselves,” said Ms Vella.
The programme’s success is evident in the growing number of youth finding their way back into education and training, breaking cycles of disengagement and unlocking opportunities for the future.
WYAT Trustee and Chief Executive, Denise Eaglesome-Karekare, is proud of the significant progress made by participants, many of whom have taken strides toward achieving meaningful qualifications and employment.
“It’s not just about getting people into jobs—it’s about equipping them with valuable skills and recognised qualifications that will serve them for life. For most participants, it’s about securing NCEA Level 2 or an equivalent, which opens doors to further education and better employment prospects,” Mrs Eaglesome-Karekare said.
What sets WYAT apart is its strong connection to the community. The Trust’s hands-on, local approach allows for real-time support, ensuring that no young person is left behind.
“Being based in the heart of the community allows us to engage with young people directly, addressing challenges as they arise and offering immediate support to keep them on track. This proactive, face-to-face involvement ensures that fewer young people slip through the cracks,” said Mrs Eaglesome-Karekare.
WYAT’s collaboration with other local youth service providers enhances its ability to offer a diverse range of training opportunities that reflect the demands of today’s workforce. From beauty therapy to carpentry, the options cater to a wide range of interests and skill sets, ensuring that every participant has access to relevant training.
The positive outcomes of WYAT’s work can be seen across the region. Former participants have successfully secured employment both within Wairoa and beyond, while others have continued their educational journey, taking their next steps toward fulfilling futures. The ripple effect of WYAT’s efforts is building a more resilient and connected Wairoa community.
With a solid foundation, a deep focus on community, and a track record of success, WYAT is looking to the future with excitement, remaining committed to helping Wairoa’s young people reach their fullest potential.
