The U10 Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa Basketball team proudly represented their town and iwi at the 2026 National Māori Basketball Tournament held in Rotorua.
Competing in the Kahikatea grade, the team played over three days of tough competition, finishing in 6th place. Throughout the tournament, these young tama showed a high level of sportsmanship, determination, and pride every time they stepped onto the court.
Each game provided an opportunity for the team to grow. As the tournament progressed, the players developed stronger combinations, learning how to work together and build on each other’s strengths. Their confidence continued to grow with every game, and their ability to compete at this level became more evident.
One of the highlights of the tournament was watching the team build resilience and belief in themselves. Playing against strong opposition challenged them to dig deep, work hard, and continue improving throughout the competition.
The experience gave these rangatahi valuable skills that will carry forward into their future — learning how to perform under pressure, adapt during games, and trust in their teammates.
Wearing their basketball uniforms with pride both on and off the court, the team represented Wairoa and Ngāti Kahungunu with heart.
WYAT is proud to support opportunities like this, where our rangatahi can grow, build confidence, and experience competition at a national level.
