Sabar Hikawai, a determined young league player from Wairoa, proudly represented Ngāti Kahungunu at the New Zealand Māori Rugby League Tournament held in Rotorua.
This opportunity took real commitment. Twice-weekly trainings in Hawke’s Bay meant early mornings, long travel and plenty of dedication to stay ready for the tournament. With support from WYAT easing some of the pressure around these trips, Sabar was able to stay focused on his goal of competing at a national level.
Before heading to Rotorua, Sabar and his teammates took part in warm-up games in Taupō and Palmerston North, building their confidence and sharpening their combinations. At the tournament, the team finished with three wins, one draw and one loss. Their efforts on the field reflected strong teamwork, resilience and pride in the jersey.
For Sabar, the best parts of the experience were the memories made along the way. Playing alongside other talented players, meeting both former and current Warriors players, and learning from every game helped him grow in confidence and set new goals for the future.
Sabar’s journey shows the power of hard work, whānau support and belief in his own potential. WYAT is proud to have supported him in taking these next steps in his sporting pathway.
