This year, Te Ōkura Tawhiti Grace proudly represented Aotearoa at the Polynesian First Nations Basketball Tournament in Auckland. It was a major milestone his first time competing at this level and one that strengthened not only his skills on the court, but his confidence, resilience, and leadership.

Te Ōkura played as part of a tuākana/tēina team, a kaupapa that brings together older and younger players to build leadership, teamwork, and mutual support. The tuākana are encouraged to lead with empathy and guidance, while the tēina gain confidence and courage through learning alongside them. This approach fostered a strong sense of whanaungatanga and ako learning through connection and shared responsibility.

The tournament itself was a huge learning experience. Although court time was limited, Te Ōkura made the most of every opportunity including an exciting game against Samoa, where he scored six points for his team. Beyond the scoreboard, he showed determination, patience, and humility qualities that define a true team player.

This kaupapa provided more than just a sporting experience. It strengthened bonds within whānau, nurtured confidence, and encouraged the next generation of rangatahi to step up as leaders both on and off the court. Te Ōkura’s journey stands as a reflection of resilience, teamwork, and the pride of representing Wairoa, Ngāti Kahungunu, and Aotearoa with heart.
