Ko Tawhirirangi te Maunga, ko Mohaka te Awa, ko Hinewai Joe tƍku ingoa.

This year, Hinewai proudly represented the Hawke’s Bay U18 Netball Team, taking her passion and skills to some of the biggest tournaments in Aotearoa.

Her campaign was packed with challenges and triumphs. At the Betty Steffenson Tournament in Palmerston North, Hinewai and her team fought hard through three games, finishing with a win, a loss, and a draw. Next came the Helen Dodge Memorial Tournament in Mount Maunganui, where they pushed through six tough games, coming away with three wins and three losses.

One of the highlights of her season was stepping out at the Rodney Green Arena in Taradale, where her team took on an international side from Dubai — and claimed the victory. Their campaign ended at the NZ U18 National Netball Tournament in Waitākere, a four-day showcase of the country’s best. Out of 34 elite teams from across New Zealand, Hinewai and her teammates placed an impressive 11th.

But beyond the scores and results, what stands out in Hinewai’s journey is the discipline, resilience, and aroha she poured into the game. She trained relentlessly — both individually and with her team — balancing her commitments, pushing through fatigue, and constantly striving to lift her performance. She described the experience as “an incredible journey, both on and off the court,” a season that has shaped her not only as an athlete but also as a Rangatahi leader and role model.

Her pride in carrying the mana of Mohaka, Ngāti Pāhauwera, and Ngāti Kahungunu onto courts across the motu is evident. Her journey is an inspiration for other young wāhine who dream of reaching this level, showing what can be achieved through hard work, commitment, and passion.

Ka mau te wehi, Hinewai — you’ve made your whānau, rohe, and Wairoa community proud. 🏐✹
