Since its opening in 2017, the Wairoa Destination Playground has blossomed into a cornerstone of community life, drawing both local families and visitors to enjoy its vibrant, inclusive environment.
Situated on Marine Parade, this family-friendly hotspot boasts a wide array of attractions designed to engage children of all ages. From the thrilling flying fox to expansive play areas, the playground provides a safe, enjoyable space where kids can play while families relax amidst picnic areas, barbeques, and sheltered seating. Its strategic location along the scenic riverbank not only enhances the site’s visual appeal but also positions it as an ideal venue for community gatherings and outdoor fun.
WYAT was instrumental in realising this community dream. Understanding the need for a multifunctional space that serves local youth and their families, WYAT took a collaborative approach, engaging the entire community in the design process. Every school-aged child in the district was invited to share their ideas, ensuring the playground reflects the collective vision of Wairoa’s younger generation. This inclusive, grassroots effort fostered a strong sense of pride and ownership among locals, making the playground a true reflection of the community’s aspirations.
WYAT’s efforts extended far beyond planning. The Trust spearheaded fundraising efforts, raising between $400,000 and $500,000 for the project. Generous contributions from the Lotteries Board and the Wairoa District Council—each pledging $100,000—ensured the playground could be built to high national standards, using local materials and labour wherever possible. This not only created a state-of-the-art play area but also injected much-needed resources back into the local economy.
The positive impacts of the Wairoa Destination Playground are far-reaching. It has become a focal point for social interaction, fostering stronger community ties by providing a welcoming space where families and friends can connect. Beyond its recreational appeal, the playground promotes healthy, active lifestyles for children, encouraging physical activity in a safe, engaging environment. It has also bolstered local tourism, attracting visitors from nearby areas to explore Wairoa’s riverfront and beyond.
